PVC Banners - Everything You Need to Know

For just a moment, forget printing. Forget billboards, Forget flags and exhibition signs.

Long before any of these, before people were using vinyl banners as we know them today. Paint was slapped on paper, fabric, and just about anything that was around, giving people a way to communicate their messages in a bold, big-impact way.

Today, they have come a long way and their popularity is still on the rise. From small outdoor signs to promote an event to large-scale building wraps that transform the urban landscape, banners are everywhere.

So why is it that they are so popular? What makes them special? How are materials brought together to create a powerful form of promotion, and what advice should you take on board if you’re considering them for your business?

In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the methods, processes, and impressive benefits.

What is a banner?

Let’s start with the basics. What is a PVC banner, and what makes it distinct from, say paper or cloth?

(Polyvinyl Chloride) is a plastic that can be made flexible. It’s the same material you could see acting as insulation around an electrical cable, or used for flooring in a house.

It would be natural to assume that a banner is made of (Polyvinyl Chloride). That’s not strictly true. In fact, they usually consists of a polyester base, which is then coated or laminated in (Polyvinyl Chloride) itself.

This gives the sign some properties that make it ideal:

  • Flexibility: only marginally more rigid than fabric alone. This means you can place it just about anywhere.
  • Long-Life: The coating on a banner protects your design, keeping the banner useful for at least five years on average.
  • Weather Proof: helps to defend against the effects of sunlight and rain. Our Vinyl signs are also treated with specific UV-proof substances, for even better results.

In addition, a PVC mesh banner uses the same basic structure, with small holes perforated throughout the design. Although these aren’t visible from a distance, they let the wind pass through to reduce stress on your fixings.

You can find out more about the properties and why they are so valuable in our post, “The Advantages of PVC Banners”.

How are they Used?

Before we look at who could use them, it’s a good idea to think about the different types that are available.

When we say a PVC sign is flexible, we mean that in more ways than one!

People use them everywhere. The Two most common types are:

  • Exterior: For use on the side of a building, on a fence, or attached to a wall. Exterior banners are often affordable enough to be used on a temporary basis if necessary.
  • Exhibition and Display: they not just for outdoor use. Internally, they’re used everywhere from trade shows to conferences and red-carpet events.

Of course, these examples don’t include those giant banners you could see on a billboard, or wrapped around an entire building.

Now that we know about the different types, we can think about who might use them.

The simple answer is everyone. We’ve seen them used successfully to promote one-off events. They’re often used to permanently advertise outside a business location. They can be fixed at sports events, used by charities as part of fundraising, or even used just to wish someone a happy birthday in a bold and striking way.

The possibilities are vast. That’s why they are everywhere.

You can find out more about who uses them and why in our post “Who Really Needs a PVC Banner?

How are they made?

Another reason that they are so popular is their affordability. Thanks to modern technology, getting a sign for your business or organisation is more affordable than ever.

They all start with polyester material, which can be treated with polyvinyl chloride in two different ways. The best ones use (Polyvinyl Chloride) coated material. Coating fixes it to the banner rigidly, largely eliminating the risks of tears and breaks (this is the option we choose).

Some are laminated, which is a cheap process. However, if the vinyl laminate begins to crack they could be easily torn and most only last weeks outside.

From the perspective of printing, PVC banner material comes ready made. It can then be fed into a large format digital printer, the same as the one you may have at home but on a much bigger scale.

Once your design is transformed into a reality, the sign needs to be finished. First, your printer will hem the sign by folding over the edges and fixing them using an industrial strength double sided tape.

Then, round eyelets or grommets are added to this strengthened section of fabric. As a result, when you put your sign up, it’ll be secured in place and stand up to the stresses and strains of wind.

With the right materials and the right expertise, making a high quality sign is easy.

You can find out more about the process in our more detailed guide, “How We Make a PVC Banner”.

What Size is Best?

Affordable, flexible, and long-lasting, banners are an excellent choice for any organisation. Best of all, you can conveniently order them online and have them delivered directly to your door.

But that presents a new problem - what size do you need? Without the hands-on consultancy of a printing professional, it can be hard to make the right decision.

Many people ask which size is most appropriate, and we’re always happy to help. We make recommendations based on your design, the available space, and the average distance of the people you’re targeting.

As a guideline, most are:

2.5 to 3 feet high

At least 4 feet across

However, the real question isn’t which one is best. Instead, ask which size would be best for your unique circumstances.

In our recent post, “How To Choose the Perfect PVC Banner Size,” you can get more advice on choosing the right size for both practicality and maximum impact.

More marketing and promotion is online than ever before, but the use of outdoor media shows no signs of slowing down. As you’ve seen, Printed PVC banners bring with them some impressive advantages, and it’s no surprise that this fairly traditional method of promotion continues.

The simple truth is that, whatever you need to communicate and wherever you need to say it, a PVC sign is an excellent choice.

Just as your Vinyl banner will last for years and years, signs will be around for decades to come.
